PORTLAND, Maine — A Virginia man will spend over 12 years behind bars after he was sentenced on a child pornography charge Friday, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.

Stewart Thornton Reed, 50, also will be required to spend five years under supervised release once he completes his prison term of 12½ years.

Reed was handed down his sentence by Judge George Singal in U.S. District Court.

Reed pleaded guilty to a charge of transporting child pornography in December 2013. He admitted sending sexually explicit photographs of a girl he identified as a 2-year-old relative.

He had sent the pictures from his email account to David Fife, a Homeland Security investigator special agent, in September, according to court documents.

Reed also has used the term “tomcatswantsyou” in the email address used to send the pictures to the agent.

A cellphone in Reed’s possession found when he was arrested in Virginia in October contained a number of images depicting minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct, including the images sent to Fife in September.

Reed has a criminal history in South Carolina, Virginia and Texas.
