PORTLAND, Maine — The Federal Aviation Administration awarded more than $4.7 million in grants for general and safety improvements at Maine airports, with the largest award of $1.4 million going to Bangor International Airport.
U.S. Sens. Angus King and Susan Collins announced the awards Wednesday. The $1.4 million award for Bangor will fund installation of runway sensors, modify the public address system in the main terminal building and make airfield improvements.
The awards also included $484,000 for the Portland International Jetport to purchase new snow removal equipment.
Other grants were awarded to:
— Belfast Municipal Airport, which will receive $138,000 to plan for required improvements.
— Biddeford Municipal Airport, which will receive $320,000 to replace an airport beacon and install a security fence.
— Brunswick Executive Airport, which will receive $150,000 to remove obstructions on a runway approach.
— Central Maine Airport in Norridgewock, which will receive $150,000 to buy snow removal equipment.
— Caribou Municipal Airport, which will receive $150,000 to plan for future airport needs.
— Eastport Municipal Airport, which will receive $150,000 to install weather reporting equipment.
— Greenville Municipal Airport, which will receive $225,000 for environmental mitigation.
— Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport, which will receive $300,000 to install wind cones and replace obstruction lights and poles.
— Knox County Regional Airport in Rockland, which will receive $135,000 to seal cracks and make other improvements to its runway.
— Northern Maine Regional Airport in Presque Isle, which will receive $300,000 to rehabilitate the runway, taxiway and apron.
— Old Town Municipal Airport, which will receive $50,000 to conduct to conduct an environmental study.
— Pittsfield Municipal Airport, which will receive $150,000 to plan for future development.
— Sanford Seacoast Regional Airport, which will receive $320,000 to replace a taxiway and plan for future projects.
— Steven A. Bean Municipal Airport in Rangeley, which will receive $200,000 to install perimeter fencing and a visual guidance system.
— Sugarloaf Regional Airport in Carrabassett, which will receive $130,000 to acquire land for development.
