ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico — A second baseman on a minor league baseball team of the Los Angeles Dodgers suffered having part of his ear bitten off in an eighth-inning dugout fight with a teammate, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.
The newspaper said Albuquerque Isotopes catcher Miguel Olivo, 35, and second baseman Alex Guerrero, 27, became embroiled in a fight during a game against the Salt Lake Bees in Utah on Tuesday that the team ultimately lost 7-4.
When Olivo was pulled off Guerrero by teammates, part of Guerrero’s ear was in his mouth.
Guerrero, who defected from Cuba last year to pursue professional baseball and signed with the Dodgers for $28 million over four years, was scheduled to undergo plastic surgery on his ear, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Dodgers spokesman Joe Jareck said the matter was being investigated by the team’s baseball operations department, but gave no details on the incident.
“The organization does not condone this type of behavior and will have no further comment at this time,” Jareck said. “We’re not ready to tell you anything else right now.”
Representatives for the two players could not immediately be reached for comment.
