BENTON, Maine — Firefighters from three departments worked Saturday night to extinguish a fire that demolished a two-story garage on Bangor Road.

The alarm came in at 8:11 p.m., according to firefighter Travis Leary of the Fairfield-Benton Fire Department. When crews arrived, they found that the garage was fully engulfed in flames, he said.

“The homeowner had been doing some welding on a vehicle. The vehicle caught on fire, and the fire spread to the garage,” Leary said. “The garage was a total loss.”

About 30 firefighters from Fairfield-Benton, Winslow and Clinton worked to keep it from spreading. The Waterville Fire Department sent an engine to cover the Fairfield-Benton fire station while the crews were at the scene, Leary said.

No one was injured, and the home, which was not attached to the garage, did not catch on fire, he said.
