SKOWHEGAN, Maine — A West Paris man was arrested on Friday in connection with a May 21 home burglary in Canaan, according to police.

Burleigh Witham Jr., 49, who has a history of burglary and theft convictions, is being held at the Somerset County Jail, according to Chief Deputy Dale Lancaster of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.

Witham’s arrest comes during an investigation of a May 21 residential burglary on Battle Ridge Road, according to Lancaster.

“The investigation revealed that sometime during the daytime hours, while the occupants of the residence were away, somebody forcibly entered the residence by breaking out a front entryway door window,” Lancaster said.

Items taken included jewelry, a jewelry box, firearm ammunition and coins, the chief deputy said.

Evidence gathered at the scene, including surveillance footage, aided police in identifying and arresting Witham, Lancaster said.

An arrest warrant was obtained for Witham and he was taken into custody with assistance from Oxford County sheriff’s deputies on Friday, Lancaster said.

Witham is charged with burglary and theft.
