AUGUSTA, Maine — A home on Riverside Drive was destroyed by fire on Wednesday morning, officials said.
Firefighters from five departments were dispatched to the scene shortly before 7 a.m., according to Augusta Fire Chief Scott Dunbar.
Heavy fire was spewing from the building when crews arrived on scene, Dunbar said. No residents were injured, but two dogs were found deceased and two cats are missing.
Dunbar said the homeowner is deployed in Virginia with the National Guard, and was on his way back to Maine. His wife had gone to work and their children had left for school.
Dunbar said the house was considered a total loss and an electrical issue is the likely cause.
The Red Cross is assisting the family and firefighters from Augusta, Chelsea, Hallowell, Togus and Winthrop battled the blaze. Dunbar said the home was insured.
