AUGUSTA, Maine — The busy upcoming Fourth of July travel weekend is on the horizon, and with it expected heavy traffic on the state’s highways.
With a high volume of vehicles expected on major roadways, state police are planning several traffic enforcement efforts, starting Thursday and continuing through next week’s Fourth of July weekend, according to spokesman Stephen McCausland.
Troopers will be on the lookout for drunk, aggressive and distracted drivers, speeding drivers, and drivers not wearing seat belts.
State police will be using unmarked patrol cars, additional troopers and aircraft to patrol.
Additional enforcement efforts will also continue through the remainder of the summer, as July and August are typically Maine’s deadliest months for traffic accidents. As of Thursday, 53 people have been killed on Maine roads so far this year, compared to 51 at this point in 2013.
