WHITING, Maine — A Calais man was killed Friday when the sport utility vehicle he was driving went off the highway, rolled over several times, and ejected him.

Thomas Tibbs, 47, was pronounced dead at the scene, said Sgt. Ralph Pineo of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

Tibbs was driving a 2003 Buick Rendezvous south on U.S. Route 1 when the vehicle went off onto the shoulder about two miles north of Gardiner Lake Road around 5:45 a.m., according to Pineo. Tibbs lost control, and the Buick struck an embankment and rolled over several times, said Pineo.

Tibbs was ejected and was dead at the scene of the accident, reported Pineo.

The vehicle was considered a total loss.

Members of the Whiting Fire Department and the Machias Ambulance Department assisted Washington County Sheriff’s Office personnel.
