BANGOR, Maine — A severed fiber-optic line left about 500 TDS Telecom customers without Internet and long-distance phone service Tuesday, a company spokeswoman said.

Local phone service and 911 service are operational, spokeswoman Cindy Tomlinson said late Tuesday afternoon.

The break in the fiber line occurred about 8:30 a.m. in Bangor, Tomlinson said. Although the cut did not occur within TDS’ service area, it did affect customers in the Hampden area. Tomlinson said shortly before 5 p.m. that restoration could take another four to six hours.
