BRUNSWICK, Maine — A Topsham man was arrested Tuesday night and held without bail after police say he grabbed his girlfriend by the neck and tried to strangle her.

Zechariah S. Menchaca, 22, remained in Cumberland County Jail on Wednesday morning, charged with Class B felony aggravated assault.

Just after 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Menchaca’s 23-year-old girlfriend arrived at the Brunswick police station to report the alleged crime.

“There was a verbal argument at the residence and the allegation is that he grabbed her by the neck and attempted to strangle her,” Deputy Chief Marc Hagan of the Brunswick Police Department said.

The woman did not require medical treatment, but police found visible marks on her neck, according to Hagan.

Officers then went to her River Road apartment and arrested Menchaca. He was held without bail because of the allegation of attempted strangulation. Menchaca is due in Cumberland County Unified Court on Sept. 16.
