PORTLAND, Maine — Two teenage girls have been sentenced to 100 hours of community service for putting a cat in a microwave last year, officials said.

The girls, both 16, were found guilty of cruelty to animals July 21 and were sentenced to community service, said Tammy Getchell, business and communications coordinator for the Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office.

The teens were sentenced in Portland District Court, Getchell said Tuesday.

Last September, South Portland police charged the girls after a video of them putting the cat inside a microwave surfaced on social media.

The names of the girls were not disclosed because they are juveniles. The cat involved was not harmed.
