BOOTHBAY, Maine — Three local teens were injured when a car carrying five people crashed early Tuesday morning on Butler Road.
Deputies received a 911 call at 1:42 a.m. Tuesday and found five teenagers in a 2000 Chevrolet Camaro, which had come to rest on its roof after crashing while traveling along Butler Road near the intersection of Beath and Country Club roads, according to a release from Lt. Rand Maker of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.
According to a preliminary investigation, the Camaro, reportedly driven by 19-year-old Benjamin Hutchings of Boothbay Harbor, was headed south on Butler Road when it veered off the road at a sharp curve, traveled over an embankment and rolled, coming to rest on its roof.
Daniel Dugay, 18, of Boothbay, who was the front-seat passenger, was taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries, along with a 17-year-old Boothbay Harbor girl and a 15-year-old girl from Boothbay, Maker said. Some of the injuries were serious, he said.
Hutchings and a 17-year-old girl from Boothbay refused transportation to the hospital, according to Maker.
Maker said Hutchings and Dugay apparently were wearing seat belts, but it is not yet clear which of the back-seat passengers were belted in.
Police await a blood test on Hutchings to determine if alcohol or drugs were involved in the crash, which is being reconstructed by Lincoln County deputies. The investigation will continue this week.
“No criminal charges are anticipated in the near future,” Maker wrote. “Once the crash investigation is complete, deputies will meet with the [Lincoln County] district attorney’s office to determine if criminal prosecution is appropriate.”
Members of the Boothbay and Wiscasset fire and EMS departments went to the scene of the crash. Butler Road was closed for traffic for approximately two hours.
