HAMPDEN — Eastern Maine Board 111 of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials is offering a Prospective Officials Class for individuals, 18 or older, who want to be certified basketball officials. Individuals living in Hancock, Knox, Penobscot, Piscataquis and Waldo counties are eligible to take this class, which will be held 6-8:30 p.m. Sundays and Wednesdays beginning Sunday, Sept. 21, at Reed’s Brook Middle School, Room 164. Classes will culminate with a written test on Nov. 2. A fee is required that covers all books, materials and testing. BANGOR, PORTLAND — Registration open for Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure 5K events, for runners and walkers, will be held in Portland on Sunday, Sept. 14 and in Bangor on Sunday, Sept. 21. The money raised through the two annual Race for the Cure events will support the fight against breast cancer. The Portland race, starting in Payson Park, will begin with registration at 7:30 a.m. The Bangor race begins from the Bangor Waterfront where registration will also begin at 7:30 a.m. Each event will include a 9 a.m. survivor ceremony to recognize the women who have fought or are fighting breast cancer. ROCKLAND — A 5K Run/Walk along Midcoast Maine in Rockland will raise money on Sept. 27 for The Maine Cancer Foundation and the “Energy 4 Life,” program which helps those locally dealing with cancer in memory of Karen Ware. TRIATHLON
PREQUE ISLE — The third annual REDY… Set… Let’s Go! Youth Triathlon will be held Sept. 7 at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. Participants between the ages of 7 and 10 will swim 50 yards, bike 2 miles and run one half-mile. Participants between the ages of 11 and 14 will swim 100 yards, bike 2.5 miles and run 1 mile. ORONO — 35th Black Bear Triathlon, Oct. 5, at UMaine, 6:30 a.m. to noon, sponsored by UMaine Campus Recreation and sanctioned by USA Triathlon, held from 6:30 a.m. to noon. It will feature a 525-yard swim in UMaine’s Wallace Pool, and a 12.5-mile bike race and 3.1-mile run along the UMaine trails and local roadways. Open to athletes ages 16 and older; event features a relay component for teams of two or three athletes. Registration fee is $50; $40 for UMaine students; $75 for teams.
