BOOTHBAY, Maine — Two people were killed Friday morning when a sport utility vehicle crashed on Route 27 about a half-mile south of the River Road intersection.

The occupants of the GMC Envoy, whose names were not released Friday afternoon, died at the scene, according to a release from Lt. Michael Murphy of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

Police told The Lincoln County News at the scene that the victims are not local to Lincoln County.

The crash was reported just after 10:30 a.m. Friday by several callers, according to Murphy. A subsequent investigation indicated that the SUV was traveling north on Route 27 at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control of the vehicle, which left the roadway, traveled into a ditch, struck an embankment and flew into the air, striking a utility pole and several trees before coming to rest on its roof.

Both occupants of the vehicle apparently died as a result of the crash. Both were wearing seat belts, according to Murphy.

Route 27 was closed for about three hours while the crash was investigated. Murphy said the investigation continues, with a reconstruction and forensic mapping underway.

The names of the victims will be released after family members are notified.
