WATERVILLE, Maine — Morgan Libby headed in a corner-kick cross from Briana Obshatkin in the 87th minute to lift the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners to a 1-0 women’s soccer victory over the UMaine-Presque Isle Owls Friday in the opening day of the Terrier Women’s Soccer Classic.

The opening half saw both teams go back and forth, with the majority of the play in the middle of the pitch. The Mariners nearly took the lead at the 26th minute when Morgan Libby took a header just wide of the goal off a corner kick.

MMA of Castine outshot UMPI 27-7 with UMPI’s Allison Lopez making 11 saves and MMA’s Kelsie Hilton finishing with four.

Field Hockey

UMass 3, Maine 2 (OT)

At Amherst, Massachusetts, Melanie Kreusch took a Sarah Hawkshaw pass in the center of the box and beat Maine goalie Emily Corbett to give UMass the overtime win.

UMass scored first in the game as Brooke Sabia scored off a penalty corner, but Maine tied it in the half’s final second when Nicole Sevey scored off a penalty corner.

UMass retook the lead at 59:24 on Sabia’s second goal, but the Bears tied it when Danielle Aviani broke free on a 2-on-1 situation and fed Cassidy Svetek from the nearside across the circle and then fired from the right side to beat Sam Carlino.

UMass (1-2) outshot Maine (1-3) 16-7 with Carlino making four saves and Corbett making two.

Women’s Soccer

Holy Cross 1, Maine 0

At Worcester, Massachusetts, after a scoreless first half, the Crusaders netted the lone goal of the game in the 78th minute. Gina Righini kicked the ball through a pair of Maine defenders to Kara Shaw, who had a step on the Maine defense. Maine keeper Elise Applegate (Lewiston, Maine) come out to play the ball, but Shaw kicked it past her and into the back of the net.

Maine has a chance near the end of regulation, but time expired before the Black Bears could do anything with its threat.

Holy Cross outshot Maine 15-6 in the game. The Crusaders also had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.

Maine keeper, Elise Applegate, making her first collegiate start, made nine saves. She falls to 0-1-0 on the season. Carly McCabe made a pair of saves for Holy Cross and improves to 5-0-0.

Holy Cross is 5-0. Maine falls to 1-4-0 on the campaign.

Men’s Soccer

UMFK 6, Pine Manor 0

At Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, UMaine-Fort Kent scored three goals in the first 15 minutes of the match before adding three more in the second half to cruise in the first official men’s athletic game in school history at Pine Manor.

UMFK sophomore Ben Kluvers opened the scoring at 8:36 of the first, redirecting a corner kick from Stuart Conway. Kennard Brown then scored a pair of goals, knocking home a rebound at 12:12 and slotting the ball into an empty net on a breakaway one-timer at 14:48, to make the score 3-0.

Gary Banton added two second-half goals for UMFK and Willie Monthe had one.

Gordon 1, MMA 0

At Bangor, Maine Maritime Academy fell to non-conference opponent Gordon College.

The two teams were engaged in a scoreless battle until the 54th minute when Gordon College capitalized on a corner kick opportunity. Andy Guthrie found Ben Gradert who then headed in the goal for Gordon.

The Mariners had three corner kick opportunities in the final 10 minutes but could not get past Gordon keeper Josh Spoonhour.

Marshall Spear was tagged with the loss for the Mariners. While Spoonhour earned the win with two saves.
