ELLSWORTH, Main — An Ellsworth man was arrested and charged with three traffic offenses after being pursued by a police officer for speeding and striking a tree, police reported Saturday.
Nelson Aviles, 50, was speeding 77 mph in a 55 mph zone on Route 1A, according to Ellsworth police Sgt. Shawn Willey, who attempted to stop the vehicle just before 7 p.m. Friday.
Aviles tried to flee, according to Willey, but he lost control of his vehicle when he attempted to turn right into a driveway and struck a tree. Aviles tried to back up but was blocked in by the officer’s cruiser, according to Willey’s report.
Aviles, who was not injured, was arrested and charged with operating under the influence, failing to stop for police and speeding 77 in a 55 mph zone, according to the report.
