ALFRED, New York — The Alfred University Saxons scored 20 second-quarter points en route to a 34-17 season-opening college football win Saturday over the Husson University Eagles.
Tyler Johnson completed 18 of 24 passes for 297 yards and five touchdowns and was not intercepted for Alfred, which also gained 142 yards on the ground. Brendan Buisch made five catches for 86 yards and two scores, while Rodney Etienne had seven receptions for 74 yards.
Johnson sparked the rushing game with 69 yards on 12 carries.
Husson of Bangor was led by quarterback Joe Seccareccia of Bangor, who went 15-for-39 passing for 134 yards. He was intercepted once.
Ryan Stroud of Dover-Foxcroft led the receivers with six catches for 58 yards, but the Eagles netted only 51 rushing yards.
Shabashe McIntosh peeled off an 80-yard kickoff return for a TD for Husson, which also got a 28-yard field goal from Josh Gray of Bucksport and a 2-yard scoring plunge from Hampden’s Logan Steward.
Stephan Dance sparked Husson with 10 tackles and Ellis Throckmorton of Bangor posted nine.
