BRATTLEBORO, Vermont — A Brattleboro woman allegedly let a child drive her car while she sat in the passenger seat drunk, according to Vermont State Police.

Jessica Mathiau, 42, of Brattleboro is charged with child endangerment following the incident Saturday on Sunset Lake Road.

According to a news release from Vermont State Police, a trooper patrolling at about 6 p.m. saw a silver vehicle parked in the middle of the street. The trooper spoke with the people in the vehicle and found that an unlicensed juvenile was driving the vehicle while Mathiau was sitting in the passenger seat, the news release says.

The trooper then discovered that Mathiau was highly intoxicated, and while the child was driving, Mathiau activated the emergency brake numerous times in the middle of traffic, according to the news release.

The trooper arrested Mathiau, brought her to the State Police barracks in Brattleboro for processing, then to the Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield, Vermont, where she was held until sober, the news release says.

Mathiau is scheduled to appear in the Windham Criminal Division of Vermont Superior Court Sept. 30.
