BANGOR, Maine — An Eddington man was sentenced to more than six years in prison on gun and drug charges on Wednesday in U.S. District Court, U.S. Attorney Thomas E. Delahanty II said.

In addition to his 75-month sentence, Nicholas McDonald, 33, also was ordered to undergo three years of supervised release during a sentencing hearing before U.S. District Judge John Woodcock.

McDonald pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute heroin and possession of a firearm by a felon in March.

According to court records, McDonald was arrested on April 15, 2013, after he took off running from a car containing stolen construction equipment that Holden police had pulled over. He was found hiding in the woods nearby.

After his arrest, McDonald was treated at a local hospital, where a package of heroin was found concealed inside his body. In the car from which he fled, agents found a safe containing a Sig Sauer Model P226, a 9 mm semi-automatic pistol, a digital scale and items typically used to package illegal drugs, court documents said.

McDonald’s DNA was found on the safe and firearm, federal authorities said. He was prohibited from possessing firearms because of a 2006 conviction of felony failure to report to serve a prison sentence.

The investigation that led to his recent sentence was conducted by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, the Holden Police Department and the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office, with the assistance of the Brewer Police Department, the Maine State Police and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
