The third of the four quarterly Downtown Bangor Art Walks, organized by the Downtown Bangor Arts Collaborative, is set for 5 to 9 p.m. this Friday, Sept. 12, and will again feature a community mural that any art walk participant can contribute to — from five year olds to folks in their 80s.
The mural will be set up in the Pocket Park, located next to Central Street Farmhouse on Central Street. The theme of this mural is “Impressionistic Exploration Through Movement,” expanding on the mural creating during the June art walk and taking inspiration from the Impressionist movement.
“What we are planning to do with this mural is to continue the theme of movement that we started on the last mural,” said Brian Monahan, char of the Downtown Bangor Arts Collaborative. “The big idea is to think small, in this case. What made the impressionists so amazing is that they worked with capturing objects as bits of light… We want people to work with small brushes very quickly. There will be lots of color and flow of color from one end to the other.”
The featured artist at this fall’s art walk is Brad O’Brien, a favorite local musician who plays in bands including River Bottom Funk and with jazz guitarist Piero. O’Brien will be performing at Main Street Music Studios, where he teaches bass guitar to students young and old.
Also on the musical side of things, the Amarantos Quartet, a string quartet featuring members of the Bangor Symphony Orchestra, will give two free performances at the KahBang Arts Gallery on Central Street at 5:30 and 7 p.m. that night.
“KahBang Arts and the Bangor Symphony Orchestra have had a strong relationship in the past, and we’re very excited about our newest collaboration,” said Meg Shorette, executive director of KahBang Arts. “The Amarantos Quartet brings together both classical and modern music beautifully. It’s a program offering that our members and art walk goers definitely should not miss.”
Other featured art this fall includes new work from Bangor native Angela Warren, whose paintings are inspired by her recent trip to Thailand, on display at the Rock & Art Shop on Central Street; a selection of art from the collection of the owners of art walk sponsors Mexicali Blues, on display at the shop all night; and a display and after party at Coespace on Columbia Street, featuring installation artist Dudley Zopp.
The art walk runs from 5 to 9 p.m.; maps of all participating galleries, studios and businesses can be found at all participating locations, or by visiting the Downtown Bangor Arts Collaborative website. The next art walk, the final one of the year, is set for Friday, Nov. 14.
