HAMPDEN — Eastern Maine Board 111 of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials is offering a Prospective Officials Class for individuals, 18 or older, who want to be certified basketball officials. Individuals living in Hancock, Knox, Penobscot, Piscataquis and Waldo counties are eligible to take this class, which will be held 6-8:30 p.m. Sundays and Wednesdays beginning Sunday, Sept. 21, at Reed’s Brook Middle School, Room 164. BANGOR, PORTLAND — Registration open for Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure 5K events, for runners and walkers, will be held in Portland on Sunday, Sept. 14 and in Bangor on Sunday, Sept. 21. The money raised through the two annual Race for the Cure events will support the fight against breast cancer. The Portland race, starting in Payson Park, will begin with registration at 7:30 a.m. The Bangor race begins from the Bangor Waterfront where registration will also begin at 7:30 a.m. Each event will include a 9 a.m. survivor ceremony to recognize the women who have fought or are fighting breast cancer. No admission fee, but donations will benefit Special Olympics Maine. The game is part of Orono Festival Day, which features a community barbecue, games for children and fireworks after the game at Webster Park.

ORONO — 35th Black Bear Triathlon, Oct. 5, at UMaine, 6:30 a.m. to noon, sponsored by UMaine Campus Recreation and sanctioned by USA Triathlon, held from 6:30 a.m. to noon. It will feature a 525-yard swim in UMaine’s Wallace Pool, and a 12.5-mile bike race and 3.1-mile run along the UMaine trails and local roadways. Open to athletes ages 16 and older; event features a relay component for teams of two or three athletes. Registration fee is $50; $40 for UMaine students; $75 for teams.
