ROCKLAND, Maine — The Penobscot Bay YMCA’s waterfront center in Rockland is scheduled to open in November.
The YMCA, based in Rockport, filed a building permit application Thursday with the Rockland code enforcement office. The document indicates that the organization plans about $160,000 in renovations to the existing building that was last occupied by Amalfi’s Restaurant.
The YMCA announced earlier in the year that it planned to open a fitness center and day care center at the location. The YMCA board had stipulated that $300,000 had to first be raised to pay for needed equipment and startup costs.
Troy Curtis, YMCA executive director, could not be reached for comment Friday.
Services offered at the Rockland facility will include a state-of-the-art fitness center, indoor and outdoor exercise studios and a child care center to serve families with infants through preschoolers, according to a news release issued in May.
The building and property is owned by Rockland Harbor Park LLC. The company also plans to build a 65-room hotel on the site, although no plan has been submitted. A spokesman for the company said this summer that the project could begin next fall.
