BANGOR, Maine — A Winn man remained at the Penobscot County Jail on Monday evening unable to post $5,000 cash bail on charges that he assaulted a woman last week in Chester.

Michael Burt, 62, is charged with gross sexual assault, a Class A crime, aggravated assault, a Class B crime, and one count each of assault and criminal threatening, both Class D crimes. He was arrested over the weekend.

Burt made his first court appearance Monday afternoon at the Penobscot Judicial Center by videoconference.

Superior Court Justice Ann Murray did not ask Burt to enter a plea to the charges because the most serious crimes, gross sexual assault and aggravated assault, are felonies and he has not yet been indicted by the Penobscot County grand jury. The grand jury next convenes on Sept. 26.

Alice Clifford, assistant district attorney for Penobscot County, told Murray on Monday that Burt had admitted to the conduct that allegedly occurred Wednesday through Friday. The crime was reported to the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office on Friday, Clifford said.

If convicted, Burt faces up to 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000 on the most serious charge of gross sexual assault.
