ATHENS, Maine — A quick-thinking school administrator kept Athens Community School from being scammed out of $600 last week.
Last Friday the school received an invoice for 50 books the school didn’t buy. This raised a red flag, so Nancy Martin dug deeper and realized her school was being scammed by a company called Scholastic School Supply.
Martin said she was just doing her job.
Thieves are modeling their look after a legitimate company called Scholastic, Inc.
Several other schools statewide say they’ve also received the invoice.
Martin found a nationwide warning from the Better Business Bureau about this scam from a fake company called Scholastic School Supply.
