NORTH BERWICK, Maine — An unidentified person died after being struck by the Amtrak Downeaster on Saturday night in North Berwick.
Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority Executive Director Patricia Quinn confirmed the death and called the person a trespasser. The person was struck underneath the Route 9 overpass, said Quinn.
None of the 108 passengers on the Downeaster was injured. The train was delayed for about two hours. North Berwick police are handling the investigation, Quinn said.
It’s the second fatality involving the Downeaster in the same town in about eight weeks. On July 23, a North Berwick man, Paul Voisine, 43, was pronounced dead at the scene after he was struck by the train in what was later ruled a suicide at the Lower Main Street railroad crossing near Town Pizza about 7:12 p.m., Foster’s Daily Democrat
reported.
