Mountain bike ride
ORLAND — Celebrate Great Maine Outdoor Weekend with a mountain bike ride at 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 28. The 7-mile, expert-level ride in the Great Pond Mountain Wildlands will connect the Dead River and Great Pond Mountain Trails to the summit of Great Pond Mountain and back. Dirt roads, highly technical sections of trail and steep climbs and descents will be part of the terrain.
Meet on your bicycle at the Wildlands’ Dead River Gate. Park at Craig Brook National Fish Hatchery, Hatchery Road, and ride ½ mile up Don Fish Road to the gate.
Bring water, snacks and helmets, and mountain bikes, with wide tires with aggressive tread, in proper working order. Front suspension is recommended.

Adventure race
ORONO — A 3.5-mile mud run, obstacle course adventure race will take place 11 a.m-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, on the trails of the University of Maine. Participants should expect to run hills, climb walls, crawl through mud, avoid zombies and have a blast.

Hockey 101
ORONO — The Friends of Maine Hockey invite the public to its free Hockey 101 Crash Course 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, in the Alfond Family Lounge, University of Maine
Learn about icing, off-sides, penalties and more from Coach Red Gendron, UMaine Hockey staff and area referees. Watch video and get answers to questions.
The Hockey 101 Crash Course is free and open to fans of all ages.
Participants also can try on Stanley Cup and National Championship rings from Coach Gendron’s collection, take a behind the scenes tour of the team locker room and training facilities, and have a photo taken as a UMaine hockey player. There will be door prizes, raffles and light refreshments.
