BELFAST, Maine — The Belfast Police Department is asking for the public’s help to find a woman they said zoomed away Friday from the scene of a personal injury accident she is believed to have caused.
The mystery woman was driving a white pickup truck on the northbound U.S. Route 1 on ramp near the bridge, witnesses told police, when she allegedly ran into the back of another vehicle. The woman reportedly got out and approached the other vehicle, a 2007 Ford, saying it didn’t look like there was any damage. However, when the driver and passenger of the other vehicle said they believed they were injured, the woman went back to her truck, according to Sgt. John Gibbs.
She sat there for a while, then drove off, he said, swerving around the Ford she hit. Police do not have a good description of the woman or her vehicle but said witnesses said she appeared to be between 35 and 50 years old, had short brown hair and was wearing all white clothing and a necklace.
No one came forward with a complete license plate number, but one witness said they believed it contained a lot of eights, Gibbs said.
The two people in the other vehicle suffered minor injuries, and their car sustained minor damage. It is against the law to leave the scene of a personal injury accident, Gibbs said, which is why police are asking for help. Anyone with information is urged to call 338-2420.
