PORTLAND, Maine — A Lewiston man was sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court to two years in federal prison on a gun charge.

Andrew Silva, 30 also was sentenced to three years of supervised release.

Silva pleaded guilty in May to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.

He was prohibited from possessing guns and ammunition because of a 2006 conviction for aggravated assault, a felony, in Androscoggin County Superior Court.

The federal charge stemmed from Silva’s arrest on Sept. 12, 2012, by Lewiston police on a domestic violence charge, according to the federal prosecutor’s office. A round of .22-caliber ammunition was found in his pants pocket and a .22-caliber pistol was seized from a living room closet.

Silva faced up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
