BALDWIN, Maine — A man and woman from Brownfield were taken to the hospital on Thursday after their van crashed into an oncoming dump truck, a Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office official said.
George Curit, 69, was driving a 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan west on Route 113 in Baldwin just before 7 a.m. on Thursday when he crossed the center line and hit a 2001 P.Y. Estes & Son dump truck driven by 45-year-old Porter resident Jeffrey Sterling, Capt. Don Goulet of the sheriff’s office said in a Thursday afternoon news release.
The crash caused the van to careen off the south side of the road. Rescuers from Baldwin were the first to respond to the scene. Ambulance personnel from nearby Standish transported both George Curit — who suffered serious, but not life-threatening, injuries, according to Goulet — and his passenger, wife Sharon Curit, 64, to Maine Medical Center.
Goulet said Cumberland County and Maine State Police units are continuing to investigate the accident, but no criminal charges have been filed at this time.
Route 113 in the area of the crash was narrowed to one line of traffic during the initial response to and investigation of the accident on Thursday, Goulet stated in his news release.
