LIVERMORE, Maine — Police say a driver falling asleep caused a head-on collision on Route 4 in Livermore in which the driver and his passenger died.

Around noon Saturday, the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department said a minivan and SUV collided head on south of the Route 4 intersection with Norton Road. The initial investigation indicates Matthew Bussiere, 27, of Livermore crossed the centerline in his SUV and struck a minivan in which the two people inside died.

The passenger in the minivan, Gary Chadburn, 46, of Leeds, died at the scene. The driver, Thomas Ryan, 79, of Leeds was taken to the hospital where he later died. Bussiere was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Route 4 in the area of the accident remained closed for for nearly six hours.
