WARREN, Maine — A 72-year-old Belfast woman died Monday afternoon when her car crossed the centerline and struck another vehicle head-on.

Blanche Foss was declared dead shortly after a LifeFlight helicopter arrived at the nearby Odd Fellow Hall parking lot, according to Knox County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Tim Carroll. The victim had been taken by ambulance from the crash scene to the parking lot.

The crash occurred shortly before 3 p.m. on Route 1 near Lewis Farm Equipment. Foss was driving north in a 2008 Jeep when she crossed the centerline and struck a 2005 Chevrolet truck driven by John Orne, 51, of Edgecomb, who was heading south. Orne and his wife, Cathy Orne, 56, who was a passenger in the truck, were taken by ambulance to Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta with injuries that were not life-threatening.

The Ornes’ truck was towing a camper trailer.

It was not known why Foss crossed the centerline.

A portion of Route 1 from the crash scene to Route 90 was closed for approximately two hours to clear the scene.
