POWNAL, Maine — The search for a 17-year-old boy from Gray who allegedly attempted Tuesday to break into a neighbor’s house while armed with a knife ended Wednesday evening when police found the man in a tree at a nearby campground.

According to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect was found 50 feet up a tree near Bradbury Mountain Campground in Pownal.

Officials say they were able to find him by pinging his cellphone.

Police say the suspect led them on a chase through the woods Tuesday after a woman called them for help. At one point he was considered armed and dangerous.

The incident started on Mayall Road in Gray around 4 p.m. Tuesday. Police say the juvenile, whose name isn’t being released, showed up at a woman’s home with a knife.

When police arrived they say he took off into the woods. Police searched the area between the Mayall Road residence and the Maine Turnpike before calling the search off around dark.

No one was hurt during the initial incident at the home or during search.
