AUGUSTA, Maine — Local firefighters were able to quickly contain a brush blaze on an island on Little Togus Pond on Thursday afternoon.

Chief Roger Audette said firefighters were called to the island, located off of Route 105, around 1 p.m.

The chief said there are three small islands in the area, and a cloud of smoke was billowing from the last one out.

Audette said no structures are located on the island, and a fire department boat had to shuttle firefighters to the scene.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire in about hour an hour, according to Audette, and given that residences are on the island, it was difficult to pinpoint a cause. About a quarter of an acre was burned.

“Somebody must’ve been out there,” Audette said.

A Maine Forest Ranger was called in to assist the investigation, but a cause has not been determined.
