SOUTH PORTLAND — Former Southern Maine Community College baseball and softball standouts Scott Nappi and Melissa Sanborn have been selected as the 2014 inductees into the SMCC Athletics Hall of Fame, the school announced Thursday.
Nappi and Sanborn will be honored during a banquet at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, in the Campus Center at 2 Fort Road on the South Portland Campus. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased by contacting the SMCC Athletics Department at 741-5927 or mrichards@smccME.edu.
“Both inductees were instrumental to their team’s success when they played here and were certainly leaders within their respective sports,” SMCC Director of Athletics Matt Richards said in a press release. “Induction into the Athletics Hall of Fame is very fitting for them, as they exemplify what we hope our current student athletes will strive to become.”
Sanborn was a Yankee Small College Conference first team all-conference selection in 2008 and in 2009. She ranks sixth on the school’s career list in home runs and is No. 7 in runs scored and ranks eighth in runs batted in.
The softball team amassed a 8-18 overall record that included two YSCC championships. Sanborn, a Gorham native, graduated with a liberal studies degree and is a manager at Dicks Sporting Goods.
Nappi was a two-time YSCC Player of the Year in 2008 and in 2009. He ranks first in career stolen bases, third in career hits, sixth in career RBIs and 13th in batting average.
The baseball team had a 54-25 overall record during his two seasons, including a 2008 YSCC championship. The Portland native transferred to the University of Southern Maine after his two years at SMCC. He works as marketing associate at Great Falls Marketing.
