ROCKLAND, Maine — A Knox County couple accused of stealing lobster crates were arrested Thursday on theft charges.

The Knox County grand jury indicted Sarah Stalcup, 33, of Warren and Christopher Stalcup, 43, of South Thomaston on the theft charges Wednesday, but the indictments were sealed until the couple could be arrested. Indictments in two other cases remain sealed.

The indictment against the Stalcups alleges that they stole more than $1,000 worth of lobster crates from Fox Island Lobster Company in Rockland and Vinalhaven on Aug. 5, 2013. Lt. Rene Cloutier of the Maine Marine Patrol said the crates were empty but that there is a market for the crates.

Christopher Stalcup was released Thursday morning on $500 cash bail. Sarah Stalcup remained at the Knox County Jail in Rockland early Thursday afternoon in lieu of $1,000 cash bail.

The two were sentenced in May after being convicted of drug charges. Sarah Stalcup was sentenced to four years in jail with all but nine months suspended and placed on probation for two years for trafficking in heroin. Christopher Stalcup pleaded guilty to a felony possession of heroin charge through a deferred disposition. If he refrained from criminal conduct during the ensuing year and performed 50 hours of community service, the charge would have been reduced to a misdemeanor possession charge, and he would be fined $750.

The alleged theft of lobster crates occurred prior to their sentencings.
