PORTLAND, Maine — The brightly lit sign glowing in the front window of Maine College of Art says it all: collect.
Art in all forms, from sultry watercolors to bold jewelry, is scattered like leaves for the school’s three-day popup art sale called Collect, which starts Thursday.
From hand-knit boiled wool scarves to graphic Angela Adams rugs to a snapshot of Bug Light, the panoply of work created by 200 students, alumni, faculty and friends of Maine College of Art is an open invitation to add original art to your life and give back to the creative college. Fifty percent of all purchases during the fall art sales go directly to the school’s scholarship fund.
“As an educational facility, teaching artists to value their work is a win, win, win,” Annie Wadleigh, assistant director of development at MECA, said.
“Everyone should have art in their daily life,” Erin Hutton, associate director of the artists at work program, said.
The popup gallery is a fun and fast way to peruse up and comers still perfecting their craft and acclaimed artisans, like Adams with a showroom in Portland.
Designers and gallerists who viewed the work during a sneak peek Wednesday were impressed.
Collect is free and open to the public 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, at Maine College of Art, 522 Congress St., Portland.
