TOWNSHIP 6 ND, Maine — Personnel from the Maine Forest Service were at the scene of a wildfire on an island in West Grand Lake, Regional Forest Ranger Jeff Currier confirmed shortly after 5 p.m. Monday.

Sgt. Peter Pelletier of the forest service said a group of forest rangers and members of the Grand Lake Stream Fire Department took a boat over to the small unnamed island, south of Birch Island, and had the fire contained Monday night.

The cause of the fire remained undetermined on Monday night. Pelletier said, however, there may have been a human element.

Pelletier said an ice shanty and about one-tenth of an acre on a roughly half-acre island burned.
