CHERRYFIELD, Maine — A brush fire that burned about one acre in a remote area appears to have been intentionally set, the Maine Forest Service reported Tuesday.
The fire, about a half-mile north of Ridge Road in the vicinity of Schoodic Lake, was reported about 10 a.m., according to Ranger Jasmine Hammond. Authorities were notified after an employee of Jasper Wyman and Son spotted the fire.
Members of the Cherryfield Volunteer Fire Department had to walk about a half-mile to the scene, according to Hammond. They brought the fire under control in about an hour and wrapped up about 1:30 p.m, she said.
Hammond described the fire as an apparent “deer burn,” which she explained is when someone sets fire to brushy vegetation in order to burn it and make an area more suitable for deer hunting.
The fire is under investigation, she said.
