ISLAND FALLS, Maine — A truck driver escaped injury Monday morning after his rig left the northbound lanes of Interstate 95, state police said.
Steven Haggan, 26, was hauling wood chips when his truck left the road at mile marker 278 around 6:30 a.m., Trooper John Darcy said in a prepared statement.
Darcy said Haggan apparently became distracted by looking for the switch to heat the side mirrors of his truck, which were fogged up.
“Steven was turning on the dome light in the truck to look for the switch,” Darcy said.
When Haggan felt the rumble strip, he looked back at the road and realized he was heading toward the median but did not have time to prevent it, Darcy said, going into the median and striking trees, disabling his truck.
Shortly after the accident, which did not injure Haggan, a Maine State Police commercial vehicle unit arrived and inspection of the truck revealed the fuel tank was fully submerged in mud and leaking fuel, according to Darcy.
Maine Department of Transportation and Department of Environmental Protection officials spent much of Monday cleaning up the scene and removing the truck, the trooper said.
Haggan was issued a summons for distracted driving.
