GRAY, Maine — A Gray man on bail on a domestic violence assault charge was arrested early Tuesday morning after a bail check produced heroin, police said.
Angel Velez, 49, is facing charges of aggravated trafficking of Schedule W drugs and violating conditions of release, according to Maine Drug Enforcement Agency commander Scott Pelletier.
At 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, drug agents from the Cumberland District Task Force conducted a bail compliance check at Velez’s Lewiston Road apartment, according to Pelletier.
His bail conditions prohibited him from using or possessing drugs, along with not having any contact with his assault victim and being subject to random searches, Pelletier said. Velez had been arrested in Sanford on June 10.
Velez consented to the search and police found the assault victim but no drugs. However, Velez refused a search of his vehicle, in which 120 bags of heroin and over $700 in drug proceedings were found. The drugs are valued at $10,000.
Velez was taken to the Cumberland County Jail after his arrest and held without bail. He was also on probation for a prior drug possession conviction from 2013.
