BANGOR, Maine — Despite the fact that thousands of Mainers remained without power Monday afternoon, officials are making progress, Bangor police Lt. Paul Edwards said.

City officials, along with Bangor police and fire, the Penobscot County Emergency Management Association, American Red Cross, Public Works and Parks and Recreation Department gathered to ensure that residents in the city without power will be safe and warm.

“Emera Maine has made significant progress in Bangor today and their efforts are continuing,” Edwards said.

Emera Maine customers are urged to keep driveways plowed and sanded to allow electricians access in which to restore power. Customers should never go near a downed power line or a tree in contact with a power line.

The city’s recreation shelter will close at 6 p.m. and reopen at 7 Tuesday morning, and those in need of shelter can stop by the Bangor police station on Summer Street for coffee, warmth and usage of telephones. Those who cannot get to the station should call 947-7382 and ask for a commanding officer.

Nonresidents of Bangor can call 211 for information regarding warming shelters, and residents are urged to check on elderly friends and relatives.

The Bangor Fire Department is also reminding those without power to minimize use of candles, have flashlights handy and keep generators outdoors.
