Big Ten punishes Maryland, star receiver Diggs
The Big Ten on Monday suspended Maryland junior wide receiver Stefon Diggs for one game for his “actions toward officials and opposing players” before Maryland’s 20-19 win against Penn State on Saturday.
The Big Ten also fined Maryland $10,000 and reprimanded coach Randy Edsall for the Terrapins’ behavior.
Maryland team captains refused to shake hands with Penn State’s captains during the pregame coin toss, and then the teams got into a shoving match.
Diggs, Maryland’s leading receiver and one of its captains, was penalized 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct. He likely was suspended for making physical contact with an official during the incident.
Edsall apologized for his players’ behavior after the game.
Packers sign McCarthy to contract extension
GREEN BAY, Wis. — After leading the Green Bay Packers to five wins in their first eight games this season, Mike McCarthy figures to catch the legendary Vince Lombardi sooner than later near the top of the team’s all-time coaching wins list.
The first of the five victories McCarthy needs to tie Lombardi for the No. 2 spot in team lore with 98 wins is all the current head coach is worried about, hoping it comes Sunday night when Green Bay plays host to the Chicago Bears.
The start of the week for the latest installment of the NFL’s oldest rivalry came with big news. The Packers announced Monday they signed McCarthy to a multi-year contract extension. Terms weren’t disclosed.
Romo likely to start in London
Tony Romo is likely to be back in the starting lineup for the Dallas Cowboys for Sunday’s game in London.
Romo will start if his back cooperates, owner Jerry Jones said, including participating in practice and coming through a lengthy eight-hour flight to England without any setbacks.
“I do see him playing,” Jones told the NFL Network. “He’s going on the trip to London, and logic tells you that we wouldn’t have him make that trip to London and back if we didn’t think he was going to play, so it does depend on the type of week he has at practice. But if he has the week we expect, he should be our quarterback.”
Brandon Weeden started and threw two interceptions in a 28-17 loss to the Arizona Cardinals that dropped Dallas to 6-3 with consecutive losses at home. Romo was hurt Oct. 27 in the Monday night loss to the Washington Redskins and diagnosed with a back contusion.
