SPRINGFIELD, Maine — A vacant two-story house on Main Street, also known as Route 6, was destroyed by fire early Tuesday, officials said.

Springfield Fire Chief James White said he could see flames light up the sky about 3 or 4 miles from the scene.

The two-story house was one of the oldest in town, White said. The owners had the house up for sale and had built another home on the same property, which was not affected by the fire.

Firefighters needed to close off Route 6 while they were fighting the blaze, White said. Crews from Lee, Lincoln, Mattawamkeag, Springfield and Kingman responded.

Firefighters were at the scene for most of the day Tuesday, White said. He added there was not much crews could do to save the structure.

An electrical issue was the likely cause, White said.
