HOULTON, Maine — Residents here have elected three new town council members and knocked a longtime incumbent off the board in Election Day voting.

Jane Torres, Brent Dickison and Matt Carr were elected to the council, beating out Paul Cleary, an incumbent who served as the council chairman last term. Torres received 1,511 votes, Dickison pulled in 1,356 votes, and Carr received 1,209 votes. Cleary captured 809 votes. The fifth candidate seeking one of the three available seats on the board, Brian Donnelly, garnered 435 votes.

For the RSU 29 school board, Sue McLaughlin, Sue Tortello and D. Scott White were elected to serve three-year terms. McLaughlin received 1,566 votes, Tortello 1,363, and White received 1,172 votes. The only other candidate for the three available seats, Rosa McNally, received 1,042 votes

Houlton residents also easily passed a referendum question that dealt with financial procedures — 1,572 to 345.

Forrest Barnes was elected to the Cary Library board of trustees, and Richard L. Goodwin and Galen Hogan were elected to the Houlton Water Co. board of directors.

In House District 145, Rep. Ricky D. Long, a Republican, defeated challenger Glenn Hines. Long earned 1,650 votes with 86 percent of the precincts reporting, while Hines received 695 votes.
