SKOWHEGAN, Maine — An Anson man pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to two counts of manslaughter in connection with a head-on crash in February that claimed two lives.

Mark Schobel, 24, entered his pleas during an arraignment hearing on Wednesday morning in Skowhegan, Somerset County District Attorney Maeghan Maloney confirmed.

Schobel’s bail was continued at $5,000 cash, with conditions to include that he not use or possess alcohol and illegal drugs and that he submit to random searches and testing, Maloney said.

Schobel was one of the drivers involved in the Feb. 27 double-fatal, which occurred in Embden.

Somerset County Chief Deputy Dale Lancaster said at that time that Schobel was traveling east on Route 16 when he passed another vehicle and struck a westbound Subaru driven by Leon Souweine, 67, of Bangor.

Jennifer Nile, 22, a passenger in Schobel’s car, was killed in the accident, and Souweine’s wife, Ruth, later died of her injuries.

Schobel was indicted by the Somerset County grand jury late last month.
