ENFIELD, Maine — A woman died and six others were injured Saturday morning in a head-on collision near the intersection of Route 2 and Mohawk Road, according to the Penobscot County sheriff’s office.
The names of the victims were not released.
An SUV occupied by three people was traveling north on Route 2 about 11:30 a.m. when it crossed into the oncoming lane of an SUV occupied by four people, Deputy Chief Troy Morton said Saturday evening in an email.
A female passenger in the SUV that was traveling south was pronounced dead at the scene.
The other six people were taken to a hospital, some with life-threatening injuries, he said.
Morton said it was unlikely that additional information would be released Sunday, adding that the accident remains under investigation.
The Maine State Police, Howland Ambulance, the Enfield Fire Department and Lincoln Ambulance responded to the accident.
