ST. GEORGE, Maine — Residents will have their say in May whether the town should buy a Port Clyde waterfront parcel for $810,000.
The Select Board voted unanimously Nov. 5 to enter into a purchase and sales agreement for the property at 10 Cold Storage Road, located next to the town pier.
The sale will be contingent on a yes vote by residents at the annual town meeting in May. The Select Board agreed to make a $25,000 non-refundable deposit as earnest money for the property.
The board voted Sept. 2 to enter into negotiations to acquire the property located on nearly two-thirds of an acre. The property has two piers, a two-story garage and a several sheds. The town has the property assessed at $1.1 million.
The property is owned by a trust for the daughters of the late Konrad Ulbrich.
The Nov. 5 vote came after a 48-minute closed-door session to discuss the possible land acquisition. The town commissioned an appraisal of the property.
The town’s harbor committee recommended in August the town buy the property.
The town manager has said the town would maintain waterfront access for commercial fishermen but also would allow for expansion of recreational boating access.
