CARIBOU, Maine — More winter weather is expected in northern and western parts of the state Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

Several counties awoke Monday morning to a winter weather advisory in effect, with a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain expected throughout the day.

Northern Penobscot, Piscataquis and Aroostook counties, along with Oxford, Franklin and Somerset counties, are all listed under the advisory, according to the weather service.

Snow was expected to move into the areas under affect Monday morning and mix with sleet and freezing rain during the afternoon. Precipitation is expected to turn into rain Monday night.

While forecasters expect four inches of fresh snow or less, the mix with freezing rain and ice has potential to make roadways slick.

The weather alerts are in effect through 10 p.m.
