TRENTON, Maine — A Trenton man who assaulted a woman with a hammer at his house last winter has been sentenced to serve two years in prison, according to court documents.
James R. Stanton, 49, received an overall sentence of eight years with all but two years suspended after he pleaded guilty to a charge of aggravated assault on Friday in Hancock County Unified Criminal Court. As part of a deal with prosecutors, charges of elevated aggravated assault and gross sexual assault were dismissed.
Stanton also was ordered to serve three years of probation after his release and to pay $4,293 in restitution to the victim.
The incident occurred in the early morning hours of Feb. 12 at Stanton’s home on Oak Point Road. Police were called to the scene after the woman, who suffered head injuries in the attack, fled to a neighbor’s house for help. Responding officers found Stanton in the woods behind the house with self-inflicted wounds to his hands and wrists, police have said.
Stanton and the woman were taken separately to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor for treatment of their injuries.
When asked by police what happened, Stanton told troopers who responded to the scene that he did “something I shouldn’t have done,” according to court documents.
