AUGUSTA, Maine — Drivers from Rockland and Manchester are in critical condition following a head-on crash on Route 17 Tuesday morning.

A 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by 51-year-old Lucretia Smith of Rockland was traveling west at the same time a 2004 Alero sedan driven by Salley Beane, 49, was traveling east on Route 17 near Cony Road.

The cars collided head on, according to a news release from the Augusta Police Department.

Both drivers needed to be removed from the vehicles by firefighters before they could be taken to hospitals. Two LifeFlight Helicopters were requested to respond to the crash. One Helicopter arrived and flew Beane to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. The other helicopter could not make it to the scene because of weather.

Smith was taken to Alfond Medical Center in Augusta by the Augusta Fire Department. She later was transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

The crash is being reconstructed by the Maine State Police. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
